Kutztown
University
Kutztown, PA

BFA Communication Design
May 1991
Foundation studies concentrated on traditional lettering,
both calligraphy and classic typeface design and structure;
and typography, learning typefaces and how to identify them.
Other courses concerned photography, illustration, watercolor
and life drawing. Workshops in corporate design, book design,
package design, and campus graphics (print work for on campus
events) complemented the strong emphasis on graphic design
courses as an upperclassman.
Familiarity with Macintosh basics began two years before
a Junior year course. Senior year design work utilized Mac
design and technology whenever possible to work up thumbnails
and pencil roughs, concentrating primarily on comparing Mac
vs. traditional methods to find the most cost effective and
expedient manner in which to get the desired quality of type
and design.
